The transformer oil bdv test (external high voltage test) is mainly to check whether the main insulation of the transformer is qualified, which means, the insulation condition between the primary coil and the secondary coil, and between the core and the shell. If it is unqualified, it will not only endanger the transformer itself and other connected electrical devices, but also cause danger to the equipment and maintenance staff.
The dielectric strength test uses a power frequency test transformer to add a certain high AC voltage and lasts for one minute. If the insulation does not break down or the leakage current does not exceed a certain value, it is qualified. For example, 10kv oil-immersed power transformers, the factory test and handover test are 35 and 30kV.
The basic principle of oil bdv test
Apply a voltage higher than normal to the insulator of the device under test for a period of time. If the insulation is in a good performance, the applied voltage will only produce a small leakage current. If an insulator of a device under test maintains its leakage current within a specified range and time, it can be determined that the device under test can operate safely under normal operating conditions
